David, 28 and already divorced, is taken on holiday to Provence by his gay best mate. The idea is to recreate the journey Vincent Van Gogh made a century earlier, from cold dark northern Europe to the sunnier south. But in Arles, the town where Van Gogh settled, David sees a nude photo of the boy whose friendship with him brought about his divorce. Deeply buried memories surface. They force David to return to London in search of the boy in the photograph and then, like Vincent before him, to make the longer, deeper journey in search of himself. This is an extremely well-written novel of a man recovering from the trauma of losing everything he had...wife, job, home. He ends up on a powerful journey of discovery into his own past and his deepest shadowed desires.David is an intelligent, likeable character and it is a pleasure to read his point of view as he travels through France with a good friend following the path of Van Gogh and seeing some of the sites of Van Gogh's most famous paintings. Art and music play background characters in this poetically introspective novel about starting over at age 28. Oh, yes, and did I mention it is a love story? The love story does not happen until over half-way through the book, but actually it is there all along waiting to be re-found and re-investigated.
What I like about the writing in this novel is that it is open and frankly emotional without being crude, and it captures real sentiment without becoming overly sentimental. The characters all feel like real people, and even the minor characters at the school in France come to life with individual, unique voices. The story unfolds at the pace it should. The author does it well; the love story needed to be at the end as it is written, not earlier, because David needs time to have many deep realizations first. When love does happen, the romance encompasses the helplessness of what it feels like to fall in love and all the fears that accompany that are written in such a realistic, honest way that even men crying in each other's arms reads as perfectly in character and crazy-normal, never contrived. The emotions are deep, rich. The romance is never crude, never cliché, but so very poignant in showing the shattering agony and ecstasy of rediscovering the self, of falling in love. I recommend this book.

Prose or Poetic?
If you check the meaning of each word, they both work with Anthony McDonald's writing style. I love everything he writes.
Perhaps Painted Prose works well describing his recent, The Van Gogh Window.
Loved it!
