Little did I know when I began reading "Dream Legend", the book's byline, "A Journey to Wholeness", would perfectly encapsulate my personal transformation that unfolded in tandem. Genuinely and bravely lying bare her own soul, the author, Miriam Nesset, emboldened me to plumb the depths of my past and meet myself with compassion and courage. Nesset's transparency is a rich gift to the reader - reassuring one that she is not alone, healing is within reach, and brokenness leads to transcendence, freedom, and wholeness that's hard won, but worth fighting for.
Divided into three parts, Nesset's trilogy of learning to surrender, gaining the wisdom, and sharing the wisdom are supported by her engaging stories, nourishing quotes from intellectuals and aesthetes throughout time, and illustrative psychological and dream work.
Reading back through the journal I kept as I read "Dream Legend", it's amazing to see how this one book gave me the tools to embrace my life with honesty, courage and hope. Nesset is refreshingly transparent, unflappable in the telling, and incredibly astute. Reading Dream Legend marked a major shift in my own journey toward wholeness and I am deeply grateful to the author for sharing the life-changing gift of her words with me.
In Facing the Condor, Miriam Nesset occupies the space between the physical world and the spiritual realm with tenacity and honesty. Her true adventure story of trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu is a clear eyed heroine's tale in the magical realism genre dappled with sunny sardonic humor and midwestern common sense. This brave woman's search for clarity engages life on its own terms. A worthwhile read!
This novel, written as a memoir broken up into three distinct life segments, should please anyone with an interest in travel, spirituality, relationships, recovery, and just plain old living. I especially enjoyed reading about the heroine's trek through the Andes to Machu Picchu. It seemed like if something could go wrong, it did -- but the trip was a magical experience despite (or because of?) the hardships endured. I found the heroine's entrepreneurial spirit and determination to make it through life, enjoying it as she went, inspiring.
Miriam Nesset's novel "Dream Legend" is a thinly veiled autobiography depicting decades of spiritual exploration, depth psychology and dreamwork. She skillfully weaves her search for authenticity, personal acceptance, physical healing and enlightenment in the story of a woman's overcoming personal demons while following her dream to become a published author.
Those of us who share Miriam's desire to heal old wounds and open ourselves to new insights and dimensions of being will find her novel to be courageous and inspiring, while managing to be entertaining and enlightening. Her liberal use of inspiring quotes stimulates the intellect while enriching the narrative.
